2008 Stroke Camp

Learn Skills and Strategies to help you Communicate again!

What is Stroke Camp?

Stroke Camp is an annual retreat for stroke survivors with aphasia and their families. Aphasia is a communication disorder most often caused by stroke.

"The central purpose of Camp is to help stroke survivors participate in life again."

The program is conducted at Kiwanis Camp on Mt. Hood. The facilities are fully accessible to those with disabilities and cabin lodging is available.

Conversation is the heart of Camp. Participants are welcomed warmly into a safe, engaging environment where the emphasis is on supported communication and social participation.

Campers participate in a variety of activities such as fishing, hiking and arts and crafts. At camp, stroke survivors acquire new communication skills. They see first hand how these techniques may be used beyond camp.

Aphasia is a family experience. So, while the stroke survivors participate in various activities, the caregivers meet. They share their successes and challenges in coping with aphasia, discussing topics from cooking, chores and travel, to healthcare and rehabilitation.

2008 Stroke Camp dates: August 22nd, 23rd & 24th
