BACHELOR OF ARTS OR BACHELOR OF SCIENCE REQUIREMENTS
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree requires a demonstrated proficiency
in one or more foreign languages. The Bachelor of Science (BS) degree
does not require foreign language proficiency. Typically students in Speech and Hearing Sciences pursue the BS degree. Please refer to the PSU Bulletin for descriptions of the requirements for both degrees and information on options for meeting the foreign language requirement.
BACHELOR'S DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
In order to earn a bachelor's degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences, students must complete both the general University degree requirements, as well as the Speech and Hearing Sciences requirements. These two different requirements are described below.
1. PSU Undergraduate Degree Requirements
a. Completion of 180 Credits A minimum of 72 credits must be upper division credits (300 and 400 level courses).
b. Completion of General Education Requirements Students should consult with one of the general education advising resources to obtain information on completion of the general education requirements. Advisors in this area are able to provide information regarding requirements for University Studies and also information about previous PSU general education requirements for qualifying students. General education advisors will be able to describe the options for students who began their education prior to fall 1994 when the University Studies requirements became effective.
University Studies Upper Division Clusters Students who complete the University Studies requirements take a total of three upper division clusters. Although students have the option of completing any of the 25 different clusters offered; there are suggested clusters that provide students with the opportunity to fulfill American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certification requirements in the area of Behavioral/Social Science.
The suggested clusters are as follows: the Family Studies cluster, the African Studies cluster, and the Women’s Studies cluster. The Family Studies cluster is recommended because it contains courses that provide information that may be helpful to speech-language pathologists and audiologists.
2. Speech and Hearing Sciences Major Requirements
The Speech and Hearing Sciences major requires the completion of a minimum of 52 credits in Speech and Hearing Sciences. All courses to fulfill program requirements must be completed for a letter grade and only classes graded C or better will be counted toward the major. Go to the main page and click on "Course Descriptions" to see the course descriptions.
