A postbaccalaureate (or “post-bac”) student is a student who has completed an undergraduate degree and is pursuing additional undergraduate course work in a specific major or area of study. Students should note that an undergraduate degree may also be referred to as a bachelor’s degree or baccalaureate degree. A postbaccalaureate student may be working towards earning a second bachelor’s degree or completing prerequisite undergraduate coursework for admission to a graduate program. There is no degree for postbaccalaureate studies. Students who complete courses as a postbaccalaureate may choose to pursue a second bachelor’s degree.
Students who have completed a bachelor’s degree in an area other than Speech and Hearing Sciences or Communication Disorders generally have not completed the prerequisite undergraduate courses to apply for admission in the Speech and Hearing Sciences Program. These students are able to complete the prerequisite courses as a postbaccalaureate student before applying to the graduate program. Students generally complete these courses in one or two academic years.
ADVISING
The purpose of advising is to assist students in planning their academic program and meeting program requirements and deadlines. In addition, advising provides students with the opportunity to discuss career opportunities in the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology.
Students should obtain a copy of the PSU Bulletin from the PSU Bookstore as individual students are responsible for overseeing their academic program and ensuring compliance with the procedures and regulations described in the Bulletin.
The Speech and Hearing Sciences Program is only responsible for advising students about the classes and degrees it offers. Both individual and group academic advising are available through the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences. A group advising session is included in the Speech and Hearing Sciences orientation day scheduled just prior to the beginning of the fall term. Group advising meetings are also scheduled periodically throughout the academic year. Students should plan to attend the group advising meetings to obtain information about courses and requirements.
To find out about when advising is available, contact the department office coordinator at (503) 725-5380.
When meeting with an advisor, students should bring a copy of all undergraduate transcripts, including transcripts from courses completed at PSU. The transcripts do not need to be official copies. At the initial meeting, students should complete a Student Information form. Students are responsible for notifying the Program Secretary if there are any address or other student information changes. It is important that student information be updated to ensure that all students can be reached and included in any department mailings.
Postbaccalaureate students may choose to complete the prerequisite courses to apply to the master’s degree program, or they may choose to take more courses to complete the requirements for a second bachelor’s degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences. Students who are interested in completing a second bachelor’s degree should also seek advising about PSU general education requirements for a second baccalaureate degree. Please refer to the Earning a Second Baccalaureate Degree information at the end of this section for additional information.
Postbaccalaureate students may receive counseling for PSU general education requirements through the Information and Academic Support Center which is located in suite 425 Smith Memorial Union (503)725-4005. Their website is very helpful at:www.pdx.edu/iasc
Admissions counseling is available in the Admissions office, located in Neuberger Hall, Room 113, 725-3511.
