Graduate Program

To be admitted into the graduate program, the following requirements must be met: 1) an overall GPA of at lease 2.75 or an upper division GPA of 3.00 or a graduate GPA of 3.00 based on 12 hours of graduate work: 2) submission of three letters of recommendation, e.g. from the college or university instructors or from employers (use the recommendation form); 3) a personal statement of philosophy and purpose in pursuing a career in communication disorders; 4) commitment to a program including no less than three consecutive terms of full-time course work during an academic year, 5) prerequisite coursework, and 6) GRE scores.

Additionally, the student should be willing and prepared to pursue a course of study that will lead to certification with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Such certification requires 113 quarter hours of course work, some of which may be completed at the undergraduate level. Clinically, the student must earn a minimum of 375 clock hours in supervised practicum, 250 of which must be at the graduate level. The certification also qualifies the student for state licensure in the State of Oregon. This is generally true for most other states.

The average Master~Rs degree student, having taken the pre-professional education, completes approximately 60-90 quarter hours of graduate work (15 term hours of transfers graduate credit from an accredited institution may be applied toward a degree). The average length of a Master~Rs degree program is two full academic years. Final requirements are one of three: a thesis, completion of a special project or taking a comprehensive exam.
