Post-Bac Admissions Course Requirements

POSTBACCALAUREATE COURSE REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO THE SPEECH & HEARING SCIENCES GRADUATE PROGRAM

Students seeking admission to the graduate program in Speech and Hearing Sciences should complete or be in the process of completing the courses listed below. These courses should not be used as a guideline for completing an undergraduate major in Speech and Hearing Sciences. Please refer to the Undergraduate Degree section or the PSU Bulletin for information about completing an undergraduate degree.

SPHR 394 - Guided Observation (Every term)
SPHR 4/587 - Basic Audiology (Fall term)
SPHR 4/588 - Advanced Audiology (Winter)
SPHR 4/595 - Organic Communication Disorders (Spring term)
SPHR 4/596 - Introduction to Clinical Management (Spring term)

The following courses, or equivalent courses, are recommended, but not required, in order to be considered for graduate admission. These courses are required for admitted graduate students.

General Information:

  • The term in which courses are offered are subject to change. Check the current PSU Schedule of Classes for actual offerings. A list of all offerings for each term of the academic year can be found in the "Course Planning Guide" located in the last section of the PSU Schedule of Classes.
  • Advisors are not assigned to students, who have not been formally admitted to either the undergraduate or the graduate program, however, assistance is available through group advising sessions conducted each term or through the Postbaccalaureate Advisor. Although students who have not been admitted to either the undergraduate or graduate program are solely responsible for planning their own course schedules, students are encouraged to seek assistance when needed.
  • Students who are not formally admitted to either the undergraduate or graduate program have no preference in admission to courses or participation in clinic.
  • Completion of the above courses does not guarantee admission to the graduate program.
  • General time line for completion of ASHA certification and graduate degree requirements:
  • 3 years minimum if Bachelor's degree was taken in another area and there is no background in the above courses.
  • 2 years minimum if the above courses were taken at the undergraduate level.
